Basketball Shooting Drills: Shooting Tips & Techniques

Developing a consistent and accruate jump shot is very important to a players overall game. It makes the offense of player hard to guard when they able to shoot the ball with great accuracy and consistency.

It also leads to open lanes to the basket forcing the defense to run out on you when you catch the ball on the perimeter or inside of the perimeter.

This basketball shooting drills page was created to help players to elevate their shooting skills. Through fundamental shooting drills.

In order for a player to become a complete player, developing a consistent and accurate jump shot is a must.

Basketball Shooting Tips


Basketball Shooting Tips:

1. Keeping your shooting elbow tuck in will help you to shoot with better accuracy.

2. Your guide hand is place on the side of the ball for one reason. That is so the ball goes in a straight line towards your target.

3. Getting in the habit of holding your follow is important. This stresses the ball to go into the basketball.

Basketball Shooting Drills


Drill #1: Warm Up

Step 1: Start about 2 feet away from the front of the rim.

Step 2: Put your non shooting hand behind your back.

Step 3: Place the ball in your shooting hand.

Step 4: You will begin taking 5 shots with your shooting hand from the spot you are currently at and once you have completed the five shots you will then take 2 steps back. And repeat steps 2 and 3 until you reach the foul line. Once you have reached the foul line you will then work your way back in towards the basket. Be sure to take 2 steps forward after every 5 shots.

*You should always do this drill first. This will allow you to maintain proper shooting mechanics*



Drill #2: Three Spot Shooting

Step 1: Begin on the left wing of 3 point line. Be sure to start 2 feet inside the 3 point line.

Step 2: Next you will toss the ball to yourself, step, catch and shoot. If you have a partner, the partner can be the passer.

Step 3: You will shoot 10-15 shots from each spot, the left wing, top of the key, and the right wing.

Step 4: Once you have completed the shots from the left wing, move onto the next spot which should be the top of the key. Then repeat step 2.

Step 5: We will do two sets of 10-15 shots from each spot.

*Important note, be sure to hold your follower through after every shot*



Drill #3: 2 Spot Elbow Jumpers

Step 1: Begin at the left elbow by tossing the ball to your self. Be sure to step into your shot once you have tossed the ball in the air.

Step 2: We will shoot 2 sets of 10 jump shots from each elbow. This will be a total of 40 shots.



Drill #4: Dribble Drive Elbow Jumpers

1. Shoot 10 shots from each elbow.

2. 2 sets of 10 from the left and right elbow.

Step 1: Start about 3 to 4 feet behind the top of the key.

Step 2: Put the ball in your left hand.

Step 3: Take 2-3 dribbles to the left elbow and shoot the pull up jump shot. Make sure you go game speed.

Step 4: After you have shot 10 shots from the left elbow. Put the ball in your right hand, shooting a pull up jump shot at the right elbow and repeat steps 1 & 3.
