Dribbling Tips

“4 Ball Handling Tips to Remember”

1) Always stay low when you are dribbling. The lower you are the more contact you will be able to absorb from the defender.

2) Always control the ball with your palm and fingers.

3) Be sure to dribble hard and under control.

4) Last but not least, always dribble with a purpose. For example, if your objective is to drive to the basket, why not take the shortest route to the basket. Which you would by attacking the defenders shoulders. Most, players now dribble away from the basket instead of at the basket. That gives the defender the ability to keep the player that is dribbling in front of them.

Dribbling Drills

Drill #1: Arms staggered, drop the ball and catch

Step 1: Position the ball between your legs with both hands. One hand will be on the front of the ball and one hand will be on the back of the ball. Again the ball should be right between your legs.

Step 2: Begin by dropping the ball and catching it after one bounce. As you begin to drop the ball, be sure to alternate hands from the front & back. For example, if you start off with your right hand on the front of the ball (front of your body) and the left hand on the back of the ball (back of your body). Then once you begin to drop the ball you will bring the left hand to the front and the right hand to the back. Alternating your hands every time you let the ball bounce.
