Basketball Defense of Principles
Triangle Defense:
Most basketball players have heard the term triangle when it comes defense. Triangle means you need to see your man and the player with the ball. So you should be between your man that and the player who has the ball.
One on One Defense:
When it comes to one on one defense it has to begin with the player wanting to stop there man from getting past them. Good one on one defense is keeping your man in front of you 90% of the time.
Help Side Defense:
If the man that your are guarding is two passes away from the ball. Then you have to be in help position. Never guard your man tight when he or she is two passes a way. Great defense of teams are able to play great team defense only for one reason and that is becuase they help each other. Whenever there teammate gets beat off the dribble they are always in position to help.
Denial Defense:
You should be in Denial Defense whenever the man your guarding is one pass away from the ball handler.
Defend the Post:
You should always deny the post entry not allowing the offense of player to easily feed the post.
On the Ball Defense:
Great defense starts with on the ball pressure. The man guarding the ball has to get the ball handler out of there comfort zone. Meaning forcing them to react to the ball pressure.
Switching Screens:
Whenever you are going to switch on the screens there has to be communication. Letting each other know that you are going to switch men on the screen.
Developing a Defense Mentality:
In order to become a great defense of player it has to begin with the attitude that I want to play basketball defense. Too many players give less then 70% effort on defense but give a 100% effort on offense. It all begins with the WANT to attitude.
